DUO MESOR
Flute & Tuba
where depth and lightness meet
About us
Duo Mesor (tuba and flute) was founded in 2024 and pursues the shared goal of exploring the broad tonal and stylistic potential of these two instruments. The diverse expressive possibilities of the tuba and flute enable the duo to interpret a broad spectrum of musical styles and genres. Their mission is to promote and perform original compositions written specifically for this exceptional instrumental combination.
In addition to regular performances throughout Switzerland, Duo Mesor works closely with contemporary composers to continually expand the repertoire for flute and tuba. The most recent commission is from Hong Kong composer William SHIU (*2000) and will premiere in the second half of 2025. In addition, the duo continually expands its program with its own arrangements and transcriptions of existing works for this special ensemble.

«Troublesome Brothers»
Exploring unexpected voices through the flute and tuba
This program unites a diverse collection of works that reveal the expressive and often surprising relationship between two contrasting instruments, the flute and the tuba. Together they explore balance and opposition, elegance and humor, depth and lightness.
Walter S. Hartley’s Duet opens a world of elegant contrapuntal clarity, a model of mid-century American craftsmanship. David Gaines’s Duo brings fresh rhythmic energy and wit, bridging classical structure and contemporary color. Claire Polin’s «The Death of Procris», inspired by myth and painting, offers a poignant and atmospheric narrative, while Ben Miles’s «Fantasy» bursts with exuberant virtuosity and humor. The Duo by the unknown composer Alfred Schust reflects our aim to promote lesser-known voices and overlooked repertoire.
At the heart of the program lies William Shiu’s «Troublesome Brothers» — commissioned by Duo Mesor to explore the playful and sometimes contradictory relationship between flute and tuba. Through tension, dialogue, and reconciliation, it embodies the spirit of this concert: a conversation of differences finding harmony in its own way.
